JJI-Joists :: Environmental Aspects

JJI-Joists & the Environment

James Jones JJI-Joist

James Jones & Sons Ltd currently operates to best-practice environmental controls, ensuring 100% legal compliance and proven sustainability throughout the entire supply chain. The Company has invested heavily in systems and personnel over the past decade to ensure that it complies with, and exceeds, environmental sustainability and standards.

The production of JJI-Joists at Forres combines Environmental, Quality and Sustainability Management Systems at each stage of the process which in turn are audited by independent third parties. Under these conditions JJI-Joists can provide distributors, architects, specifiers and builders with total confidence that they can meet their respective Corporate and Social Responsibility (CSR) standards and reporting requirements. The Management Systems are based on a process of continual environmental improvement enabling end users to meet or exceed CSR performance targets.

JJI-Joists are the only I-Joists available in the UK that can claim the following:

  • FSC Accreditation & Labelling
  • PEFC Accreditation & Labelling
  • Life Cycle Assessment
  • ISO14001: 2004 Environmental Management System

FSC

JJI-Joists have been accredited by BM Trada Certification Ltd since 17th December 2004.

When specifying and ordering JJI-Joists under the FSC scheme, full chain of custody will be provided.

FSC Mission Statement

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) shall promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests.

Environmentally appropriate forest management ensures that the harvest of timber and non-timber products maintains the forest's biodiversity, productivity and ecological processes.

Socially beneficial forest management helps both local people and society at large to enjoy long term benefits and also provides strong incentives to local people to sustain the forest resources and adhere to long-term management plans.

Economically viable forest management means that forest operations are structured and managed so as to be sufficiently profitable, without generating financial profit at the expense of the forest resources, the ecosystem or affected communities. The tension between the need to generate adequate financial returns and the principles of responsible forest operations can be reduced through efforts to market forest products for their best value.

PEFC

JJI-Joists have been accredited by BM Trada Certification Ltd since 17th December 2004.

When specifying and ordering JJI-Joists under the PEFC scheme, full chain of custody will be provided.

Please download the JJI-Joist PEFC Certificate and JJI-Joist PEFC Schedule.

PEFC Mission and objectives

PEFC provides a framework for the development of and mutual recognition of national or sub-national forest certification schemes that have been developed locally according to internationally recognised requirements for sustainable forest managements.

PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests.

PEFC contributes to the environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of forests for present and future generations.

PEFC aims at strengthening and improving the positive image of forestry and wood as a renewable raw material.

Life Cycle Assessment

JJI-Joist Life Cycle diagram

True sustainability can only be measured and improved upon by assessing all environmental impacts associated with the sourcing, transport and manufacture of that product (i.e from the forest to the end user).

JJI-joists can help to mitigate climate change as timber acts as a carbon sink. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed by trees and used to create wood. This CO2 is only released when joists are destroyed after a typical 60 years lifetime. As sustainable timber is used for the production of JJI-Joists, other trees are planted to replace harvested ones immediately, closing the CO2 cycle and contributing to keep a constant or even increasing volume of CO2 locked away from the atmosphere where it can contribute to climate change.

The continuous planning and research to minimise transport, purchase new formulation resins and use biomass as a way to substitute fossil fuels ensures that impacts throughout the life cycle of JJI-Joists are minimal.

These low impacts have been recognised by the current scheme created to quantify environmental impacts of products such as BRE environmental profiles. Scores for this scheme are used in the assessment process of "The Code for Sustainable Homes" in England and Wales and "Ecohomes" in Scotland. Timber I-joists such as JJI-Joists achieve the best scores in this scheme (A+) and therefore can help specifiers to achieve the Zero Carbon House level.

ISO14001:2004

JJI-Joists ISO 14001:2004 accreditation guarantees compliance with all current and forthcoming environmental legislation. Systematic environmental improvements are targeted, cost effective and innovative. Employee competence has enabled reductions in manufacturing wastes and energy use throughout the site. Sustainable heating systems combine with evolving process technologies to deliver a JJI-Joist with the smallest environmental footprint possible.

James Jones & Sons Ltd currently has ISO14001 Certification at two other sawmill sites, Lockerbie and Aboyne, in addition to all Group Harvesting Operations.
