The following case studies are examples of suitable applications of JJI-Joists and BJ-Beams in a broad scope of project types.
2009 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, Scotland's most famous Scottish poet and a lyricist. The Natural Trust for Scotland, as part of the celebrations, is in the process of redeveloping the Burns National Heritage Park in Alloway, Aryshire. This project involves the redevelopment of the entire site and the construction of a new, world class, state of the art museum, exhibiting the most important Burns collection in the world. The new museum will be open by Autumn 2010.
This £21M project incorporates JJI-Joists extensively throughout the ground floor, first floor and roof structures. The design of the JJI‑Joist and BJ Beam components was undertaken by James Jones & Sons Ltd, with their inclusion within the overall building scheme approved by the Architect and Engineer. Supply was through Alexanders Timber Design.
The overall project used 5,700 lm of JJI-Joists and 170 lm of BJ Beam. The ground floor construction incorporated 350mm JJI‑Joists and the first floor 400mm JJI‑Joists and 195mm BJ Beams. The striking wave-shaped roof was constructed using 220mm JJI‑Joists and 300mm BJ Beams.

Rebuild of a 60 year old 15,000m2 bird observatory. The Observatory is the lynchpin of Fair Isle's fragile economy, providing accommodation and research base for visitors, scientists and students studying Fair Isle's migratory and resident birds, including the island's precious seabirds. The observatory costing £4M will be open 1st May 2010, they are taking booking now!
The floors, ceilings and roofs of the 30 high performance closed panel 'modules' are constructed using 9,300 lm of FSC certified JJI‑Joists and 1,700 lm of PEFC certified BJ Beams. James Jones products were used extensively throughout the structure due to their green rating and ease of construction. The modules, manufactured by AHW Building Solutions, were constructed in Kirkwall, Orkney and shipped (12 hour journey!) and installed in a 8 day weather window. Supply was through RTC Timber Systems.

Fourteen blocks of new build single storey timber frame wards with mono pitched roofs averaging 2150m2 roof area per block and a total of 1300 JJI-Joist roof and floor cassettes. It is the largest single project using JJI-Joists to date.
Deep JJI-Joists are an ideal solution to achieve long clear spans. Mono-pitched and flat roofs are extremely common in the public and non-residential sectors and are therefore suited to using JJI-Joists when an open plan environment is desired below. In the last 2-3 years the use of JJI-Joists in commercial and industrial buildings, as opposed to housing, is becoming more popular.
Historically Architects and Engineers would have specified steel or timber roof trusses to create the mono-pitched and flat roofs that many of these buildings require. However now more specifiers are looking to timber I-Joists to achieve high levels of insulation and a thermally efficient and sustainable roof structure.

JJI-Joists were used extensively throughout this project as specified by the Architect whilst the detailed design was completed by the Project Engineer. The design remit was to use as much locally sourced material as possible.
The length of the building leant itself to the use of 12 metre JJI-Joists in the floor and roof constructions substantially reducing installation times.
This was one of the most complex JJI design projects that the timber frame manufacturer, who are also a JJI-Joist Distributor, have supplied but thanks to team work between them, the Main Contractor and Architect, it resulted in a very smooth and problem free installation.
The ground floor comprised of 1700 metres of JJI-195D as did the roof purlins whilst the external walls used 2000 metres of the same product. However the first floor joists used 750 metres of JJI-300B.

This development was for the extension to the Meadowfield Secondary School in Sittingbourne, Kent.
The specification and design was the sole responsibility of the Consulting Engineer in this instance whilst James Jones & Sons quantified material requirements for the school's first floor layout.
The floor used predominantly JJI-450D joists whilst the corridors only required JJI-300Ds.

This development was the first of several Children's Centres roofs supplied to Lambeth Education.
A design appraisal for all of the schools was completed by James Jones & Sons Ltd and then accepted by the Consulting Engineers, Alan Conisbee & Associates. The quantification of materials was carried out by the Main Contractor, Diamond Build PLC.
The project used 300mm deep JJI-Joists and three section sizes of BJ-Beams.
