Macro Micro

  • The Macro Micro Studio is a 50m2 Passivhaus project fully designed, led and built by eight Masters students within The Dundee University, School of Architecture
  • One of the first full scale, off-grid prototype net zero carbon timber structures in the UK
  • The studio, with its built-in monitoring devices will enable research into existing and emerging energy technologies
  • Both roof structure and mezzanine floor incorporating JJI-195D I-Joists and JJ-Beam Glulam
  • James Jones & Sons worked closely with the students to help develop the extremely complex roof structure
  • The design incorporates construction practices suitable for use in low energy housing to Passive standards, which will benefit the continual development of the Passivhaus movement in the UK  
  • The Macro Micro Studio has been shortlisted for small engineered building / structure of the year in the ‘Timber in Construction’ awards for 2013
  • The project team intend to continue working closely with key industry stakeholders, research organisations and specialist consultants in the field of low energy building to develop their ideas into new market solutions
  • On completion The Macro Micro Studio will be open to the general public and the work studio will house a maximum of six employees
